On lawless lawmen:

My dad was a brickmason who found himself out of work during the Depression. As an Irishman and a Democrat, he managed to acquire employment with a New York area police department.

He frequently related an episode of training he received from a senior officer:

Having encountered a fellow sleeping on a park bench early in the morning, his trainer began to pound the bench-warmer with a billy club, as he berated him with this proclamation:

"It ain't that I hate'cha that I bate'cha., it's only to show me autority."

Maybe that's what Kristi Noem and her ICE agents are trying to do.

I am convinced that Donald J. Trump must suffer from the world's largest inferiority complex; thus his need to constantly proclaim his greatness, his intellect and his power.

Reminds me of some classmates in junior high school seven decades ago.

Thoughts on the N.I.C.E. Age,

Thanks to my former moral exemplar, that sold his soul out to Heat Miser in the flesh, Dennis Prager used to retell the amazing wisdom of one Viktor Frankels response to the question of what Viktor thought of the Trumpers and anti Trumpers, I mean the German people. Viktor took the suggestive gross generalization and narrowed the definition down to the content of the individual’s character - There are two types of people in the world-the decent and the indecent. Anywho, I met a delightful chap born in the U.S.A…Kentucky, that is…he could have fooled me…cuz I reely cudnt undustan n fn word he was sayin…I would have thought he was a true Scotsman…I defegate you negatory (hat tip Jonah, all peace and praise be upon Him)

I admire Zelensky for not burying his fist into Heat Misers shameful orange conman face in the Bada Bing when the POSPOTUS blamed all the raping, pillaging, kidnapping, mass murdering on the victim…oh, and his lap dog J.D. (stands for just deuche)

What is it with The Don that he trolls someone that actually did have a victorious election stolen from her and has still gotten away with inciting a white trash riot and costing a young looney true believers life over a BIG FING LIE, The Art of the Steal, Steve Bannon made up whole cloth God help U.S.

Again, there is no such thing as T.D.S. Trump is a Deranged Sociopath. Care for me to commentary evidence…it is an embarrassment of a life styles of the rich white trash and infamous Hugh Hefner friends and fans only now freaks and geeks. God help U.S.

Back to N.I.C.E. Every single one of these goons just following orders should be rounded up like the S.S. when those just following orders had to finally answer for their just following orders…If there is any a good statist amongst them rhesus Trump rally monkeys, I have NOT seen it, or heard an outcry against the no good officer who should be rotting behind bars for the rest of his misspent life…and his Psycho Killer Dear Leader too (Minnesota N.I.C.E. = bang bang bang die you Fing bitch). Again, why is The Don still your Presidente Duterte. God HELP U.S.

How soon is now when everything Heat Miser has touched has flamed out and every mention of Hitler incarnates, I mean Trumps name lives in infamy…as, forgive me Jesus, the utterly shameless, soulless Heat Miser can go back to hell, where he belongs, right now…Ashli Babbitt still cannot be reached for comment and neither can Renee Nicole Good. Enough is enough of this madness

Gotta run on. Thanks for taking my rant Onward and Upward. I wish you a pleasant, blessed Sunday. Peace through superior mental firepower

We can question, oppose, criticize the tactics until the cows come home, but let’s never forget the mendacity of the previous administration vis a vis our borders that led to this reaction. Overreaction if you will.

As someone who tutors immigrants in English, I’m not unsympathetic to their plight. And yes, the vast majority are industrious and otherwise law abiding. Still, we’re a nation of laws or we’re not. We have borders or we don’t. We have requirements for citizenship or we don’t.

On another note, after years of dilly dallying I finally subscribed to The New Criterion and, oh my, I need about 3 more hours in the day.

One of the really depressing things about the raid on the Mexican restaurant is the number of people who find it hilarious. It’s almost as depressing as the number of people who think Rene Good had it coming, Zelenskyy is a welfare queen, etc. So far, the worst thing for me about living in the Trump era is learning that I don’t live in the country I thought I did.

Or, of course, “had he not driven…”.

I got hung up on the lack of a direct object noun. I was imagining the golfer driving his cart (or his car) into the water.

The polite inquiry is, "I can't place your accent, friend. What part of Texas are you from?"

"And what kind of man would accept another person’s Nobel medal? Particularly from a woman, I would say?"

To be honest, Mr. Nordlinger, I wish you wouldn't say, "Particularly from a woman," as if there is something second-class, something cringe, about being a woman. A man - a good man, a man building for posterity - accepts a baby from a woman without any diminution of his masculinity.

No, I don’t agree. It was very unchivalrous. And therefore unmanly.

CynthiaW's avatar

"I don’t agree."

That's fine.

When I was growing up and all in the family were going for a ride with my dad…not once in the entirety of their 26 years together while I was alive did I witness my mom open the car door, nor ever see my mom open the car door for my dad💁🏻

Interesting. I always enjoy reading your comments CynthiaW (here and elsewhere). As a man, I interpreted that completely differently. I read it as criticizing Trump for not being chivalrous. Similar to a man walking through a door held open by a woman instead of stopping, holding the door, and saying “no, please, after you.”

CynthiaW's avatar

I am not suggesting that Mr. Nordlinger does not have good intentions. However, "as a woman," I interpreted "particularly from a woman" negatively. I expect every person who has a hand free to hold a door for other people. I expect every person who is physically able to yield to any person who, for any reason, is not.

People might say, "As men, our way of seeing this is the correct way," but that's kind of making my point, I think.

HCG4's avatar

I didn’t think you were impugning his intentions. Nor do I think my interpretation is necessarily the correct one. I genuinely found it interesting how differently we interpreted it.

CynthiaW's avatar

Now I don't want to imply that my interpretation is the one and only "as a woman" interpretation! I don't represent women, just my own goofball self.

And thank you for the compliment above. I like to think I'm a contributor to edifying, or at least amusing, discourse.

HCG4's avatar

To your last sentence: Indeed you are - on both counts. :)

CynthiaW's avatar

Thank you. I'll remember that next time my teenagers tell me I'm boring.

("You're welcome," I reply. "Boring parents provide a prosperous and stable life for ungrateful teenagers.")

Richard Finch's avatar

That was my interpretation too.
