That was a very edifying chat. Mr. Burns's discussion of his service in Mauritania reminded me of when I interviewed with the State Department in 1986. I was 19 years old, a college junior, and it was obvious from the first minutes of greeting other interviewees that I was completely outclassed.

Nonetheless, I went through the whole day-long grilling. At one point, a panel of three interviewers asked what I would do if I were a junior political officer in a consulate in Africa, and some disaster were occurring, and Americans and everyone else was rushing to the consulate seeking assistance ... and I blurted out, "Call my mom!"

Guess who did not have a career in the State Department?
