Oh Mahler. I am not a huge fan of high Romantic German symphonic music. But I sang once in the choir for a performance of Mahler 2. And the thing I found most frustrating wasn't the agonizing wait to get to the point where we all stand up and sing. It is that he wouldn't just end the thing. You have this one glorious, transcendent moment of resolution with the choir in that final movement and then he just keeps churning along for several minutes, dragging out the point. Hmm. Rather like almost all the rest of high romantic German music. Sorry, Jay, it just drives me nuts.
On Donald Trump, conservatism, antisemitism, and eugenics, I have but one comment: each is a product of the organized Left.
Each has been foisted on the Right to some extent, and for some interval, but none has been ever been witnessed by the principled conservatives with whom I am familiar.
There is a university professor in Ontario, Canada, whose name escapes me, who claims that there are over 300 FarRight organization operating in the Province.
When pressed to name the offenders, she cannot. Or refuses. But the narrative persists; the myth further ingrained.
Your observation about John Cornyn and the filibuster reminded me of Groucho Marx: "Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others." It also called to mind the 1952 speech of Judge Soggy Sweat in Mississippi, "If By Whiskey..." John Grisham reads the speech here: https://youtu.be/qPzUcJcgXUA?si=wo060_IMfMM2kzda&t=297
I have voted for John Cornyn in all of his elections thus far. I don't always agree with his positions, but I've always regarded him as a principled Reaganite conservative. Based on his recent actions in which he has abased himself, reversing long-held positions, apparently to get Trump's endorsement, I'll not vote for him again. As I can't support Talarico either, for the first time in my adult life, I'm considering just sitting this election out.
Re rugby and poor editing, totally agree. One of my peeves is naming and abbreviation or acronym for longer names/ titles, e.g., “…the U.S. Department of Justice (“DOJ”)…” or “Alonzo [or whatever his name it] Manuel Lopez Obrador (“AMLO”)” and then NEVER referring to it again. See it too often!
I have a buddy in Australia with whom I correspond regularly. He is a sports enthusiast and often comments on football matches. It can be confusing, as "football" there can refer to rugby, soccer, Australian Rules football, or American Rules football. All have leagues and active followings.
Remember when “College Republican” brought to mind Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox’s character on “Family Ties”)?
Yes!

Thx, Don!
1. In 1976 I walked the campus of the University of Vermont in a handmade FORD/DOLE T-shirt.
2. I have never met a Young Republican I would not go out of my way to avoid.

And the beat goes on.

Thank you!
Have heard it said an Alabama politician once avowed “Those are my views. If you don’t like ‘em I’ll change ‘em.”
Couldn’t confirm this on Google, but, as the British tabloids say, “Some stories are too good to check.” (Couldn’t confirm that one either.) 😀
