I did get my political rocks off when Reagan’s handlers co-opted The Boss’s scathing left wing lament over Vietnam disaster and flipped over “Born in the U.S.A.” into a proud to be American rock anthem. But, please forgive me Jay, being raised on a heavy dose of political punk rock, knowing all to well the meaning of The Fixxx “I want my M.T.V.”, making like Beavis with no butthead to talk too on the couch, that I Jaywalk this way…If you told me in 1984 that one of these days a Manhattan playboy Hugh Hefner wannabe, meets Morton Downey, Jr meets Tony Soprano, Don King Trump would become President, and even make like Grover Cleveland….I woulda pored sugar all over my Wheaties and said. “Yeah, right…and the greatest American hero Bruce Jenner will make like a drag queen in front of thousands of peoples at the Trump-Kennedy Center…and thousands of fans will cheer him chanting ‘You go girl!!!’” Didn’t you just love the pay off at the bottom, as the sugar would sink to the bottom and ones breakfast of champions would turn into a bowl of sweet cream!
Speakimg of World War 2, Jonah has reminded U.S. how lucky our Republic was to have avoided a Henry Wallace administration…It is not without exaggerating in am alternative his story The Soviets would have won the Cold War, as the communist sympathizer would have passed on more than the big one of state secrets. Now a Stalinists revanchist has a supporter in The White House on one day, and on the next our anti truth Neo nationalist sociopath actually does do things to undermine the K.G.B. crime boss, then the next day is helping his fellow mobster, I mean monster again. Please, Dear God HELP U.S. Gotta run on. Thanks for taking my rant Onward and Upward. Go Blue (I must admit, I am jealous, as I still have not gotten over Miles Brand making like Truman and saying to The General “You are relieved”…it was like a death in the family…didn’t I say I gotta run on). Peace through superior mental firepower
I spent 9th grade algebra 2 writing a story about the teacher called The Adventures of SuperNeiman. That poor, suffering math teacher. Someone slipped a copy of it under his classroom door one morning. I'm told he framed it and hung it in his house.
On musicians being jackasses, there is a certain fairly well-known violist I'd happily consign to perdition.
"Well,to hell with 'em,you know". Good for you, love it. I often wonder what the attitude of this country would be like if Trump simply rose above the noise. If he ignored the criticism, stopped responding to every slight with over the top viciousness. Just acted...presidential... I realize it's never going to happen but damn, dial it down for a change.
On a grey, bleak Saturday afternoon in 1975, my Dad was driving me to hockey practice. I was twelve years-of-age. We were listening to the local London, Ontario AM radio station. A dull, soulless, radio wasteland.
Suddenly this sound came over the tinny speakers in the Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagon like nothing I had ever before heard. It was "Born to Run" by Bruce Springsteen. I was hooked.
I listen to music that I like. I like to think that I listen for excellence, not genre. The creation & execution of music is so far beyond my ability to comprehend, I hold these folks in absolute reverence.
Having said that, I have no interest in a performer's marital status, sexual proclivities, wealth, or personal and political opinions. I am not interested in what Brad Pitt thinks of the filibuster, or what "The Boss" thinks about minimum wage laws or illegal aliens being rounded up and deported.
I appreciate your comments regarding the use of appropriate language, First Amendment rights, and the limits on free expression. Just because we are allowed by law to act in an undisciplined & uncivil manner, doesn't mean we should. Perhaps we should embrace our own personal "common good" and strive to make it foundational.
Donald J. Trump is many things, and among them is that he is a boorish, vulgar, impulsive, charlatan who is unfit to lead such a splendid people, and their Nation. That he does initiate some things with which I am in favour is beside the point; think what he could have accomplished had he been more conventional.
As Tom Waits has commented, "a gentleman is someone who knows how to play the accordion, but doesn't."
What a surprise to see the title. I spent 6 months in Burkina Faso a few years ago. Lovely place, lovely people. So few people even know the name Ouagadougou.
Happy Easter. Your comment about the math teacher hit home. About 10 years ago I ran into my 7th grade art teacher in a restaurant. As we briefly reminisced I commented to her friend at the table with her: "She did the best she could with what she had to work with." The smile of appreciation from the teacher told me she needed to hear that more often from her former students. We were not a talented lot.
Just a note to mention an Abdi Bashir jr. played basketball for Kansas State this season—now in the portal. Different family, I suppose.
Good stuff, as always.
Thank you, Jay. True to and worthy of both Passover and the Lamb.
Hope you had a wonderful Easter, Jay. But crawfish so close to the Seder table? Ove vey!😊

It's always a joy to read you, Jay. Even when you're on a rant (not today), you are always a courteous gentleman. A rarity these days, it seems.
Thank you much.
Back at ya ! Gotta go for U Conn thought my son's HS bud is an assistant there !

Happy Easter!
We are in that school district and I could tell you some stories.

A wonderful share.
Thank you.
