I am a funny kind of pro death penalty person: I would easily find myself defending Trumps summary execution of a mass murderer, mass rapists and pillager of humanity, clear and present war criminal Putin…in Hungary…for the simple Catechismal reason - Necessity. Just as if I had the power and position in Congress I would have gone further than Rand Paul and already called for the Impeachment of Donald J Trump for extra judicially, I mean The Dons unconstitutional hit squad our monster, I mean mobster President Duterte, I mean Trump has ordered on “‘suspected’ drug smugglers”, I mean euphemistically called “narco terrorists”…Where is the outrage in formerly respected conservative circles, such as the now defunct Heritage Foundation, National Review, FOXXXY News…oh, speaking of hoping on the Trump Train and executing one’s own eternal souls wellbeing. God help U.S.

Robert Francis Prevost’s logic offends me, as Putin has forfeited his right to live decades ago, when Vlad the Impaler committed his first…of thousands…of murders…but that’s okay with The Don, he has nothing but respect for dick tator for life. Just as Pope Leo the whatever does not have moral clarity or courage to condemn the Trump Bible Publisher for his ordering mass executions…but the so called Vicar of Christ does dare question the souls of anti climate activists. God help U.S.

But speaking of souls, I still cannot forgive David Frum for having written and President Bush the Younger delivering one of the worst speeches to a sold out Congress in our lifetimes Jay- The Axis of Evil had nothing to do with the atrocity of September 11th, just as the armchair warrior could not even get the unholy trinity right, then, or now. Do you know how many innocents have been disappeared…speaking of executions, at the behest of three evil regimes…who’s power mongers are one and the same now, as they were twenty four years ago- the C.C.C.P. (The new and improved evil empire Chinese Communist Corona Party), Russia and Iran…Monsters, three different ones, whose crime bosses should be whacked…not because I am a funny kinda pro execution person, just pro eliminating evil doers…the corollary of do unto others as they have done. God help U.S.

A banana republic, if we can get rid of it, in the meantime resistance is not futile, but ones moral duty. Gotta run on. Thanks for taking my rant Onward and Upward. Peace through superior mental firepower

There are acts of killing which are so evil that I firmly believe in the death penalty. I do not mourn the execution of Sadaam Hussein or the killer of an innocent child. I do believe that a fair and rigorous trial of any individual facing the death penalty is mandatory prior to any execution. I have just seen too much evil around the world, in my long life, and firmly believe there are circumstances in which execution of the evildoer is warranted.

Oh, Jay! Why do you do this to me? It is a beautiful fall morning here in mid-MO, and I was looking forward (onward and upward, also?) to a happy start. Then I chose to read Jay first.

Oy.

So much for happy. You require me to think about serious stuff - conflicting convictions and despair for my nation.

Reading Jay is like exercise: exhilarating at times, exhausting at others, beneficial in the long run.

Keep up the good work; I will try to keep up with you.

I met C.N. Yang when I was a graduate student Teaching Assistant in 1974. He was personable and very concerned and supportive of all of us young aspiring physicists. I'm sad to hear of his passing.

Thank you Jay. I would be curious on why you oppose the death penalty, as I do, indeed feel very strongly about it. Although I attend Quaker meeting, I am not a pacifist, not even a non interventionist, somewhere a little more hawkish than Obama and more dovish than Bush Jr. because I believe in the necessity of defending oneself, or others from bullies like Putin, in Ukraine.

And in the need for self protection, I have no compunctions about locking up people who would risk public safety, and it seems irrelevant what racial breakdown that results in.

But there is no public safety involved in executing a human being. It is not defense. It is vengeance, pure and simple. It denies the idea of redemption and that there is the light of God in even the worst of us. I am not particularly a Christian, but it seems the antithesis of what Christ taught.

I have no problem with prisoners living a spartan life and compelled to be useful and productive. After all penitentiaries are for penance. We have an ongoing prison ministry in our Meeting, and it always humbles me, because I think, there but by the grace of God go I.

As to Benjamin Franklin, one interesting aspect of him is that a younger version owned slaves but then later he was the leader of the Pennsylvania abolitionists. He also was a Deist, as was Jefferson and Madison, which is a belief in God within the confines of natural law and a denial of omnipotence and miracles.

Wow ! I get to comment now ! With you on the death penalty - abortion thing BUT why do we get to decide which life is more precious.

As an evolving Buddhist, I look to respect all life and being I don't believe in God,I don't get to play him .
