Labash was right to recommend a subscription to you and Onward and Upward. Damn you are an excellent writer. Superb take on war. (Graduated high school the year we exited Vietnam.)
Same from me. I just re-upped a lapsed Slack Tide subscription and got on board with Jay because of Labash’s recommendation.
Jay, thanks for becoming a Substacker. I’ve read you for years even without a National Review subscription which I’d let lapse. It was hard to read the column on my iPad because there were many pop ups that jumped on and were difficult to remove.
Anyway, now we have you from a better place.
Additional comments about your commentary above, Jay.
First, your comments on war, war mongers vs peaceniks, very interesting.
Re: Russia. Can you even imagine the societal depression of that place. I can’t.
Russia’s population is dwindling. It’s just about 144 million in the largest country on earth and they’re losing population. Low birth rate of course, but they were badly harmed by COVID as well. Last time I checked, Russia’s GDP was about 17th highest in the world, about like little Italy. These two facts are telling us something huge. Russia is teetering. Why aren’t we and Europe leveraging this actively against Putin and his oligarchs.
I can’t understand our administration and their coddling of Putin and Russia.
Second, I love the later quote from Dottie Pepper, “Golf at its simplest is golf at its best.”
Is there a better golf analyst than Dottie on TV? I think not.
Re: Re-Sovietization: the campaign against Memorial, not least in Karelia as you know, and I'm expecting some real energy behind Katyn denial (so far as I can tell it hasn't ramped up full force)
Excellent article. In any endeavor or profession, if you are number 1/the best, you do not need to tell people you are. Same for nations. I was unaware of Christie Noem's shenanigans about jumping back and forth from Canada to the US. NOT a "cool" or wise move. Such nonsense as that and the "51st State" silliness needs to stop.

Thx a ton, Dave.

Great article. A quote attributed to President Truman: “The only thing new under the sun is the history you haven’t learned.”
True enough.
The quote about the last man on earth reminded me of this comic.
