The note about the mother and the irritated child reminds me of something I read long ago. I can't recall the source—maybe you or one of your readers will recognize it. The writer noticed a woman trying to soothe an unhappy child. "Pretend you're on an adventure," she said. This advice struck the writer as excellent, and I concur. It's helped me bear some frustrating experiences in the years since.

I saw the disgusting behavior shown to the European Team and sadly believe we have lost "good manners" in our country. On Golf though: "Both Buddha and Confucius said: "The first step on the path to Serenity is to Give Up Golf!!" 👍🤣

Ryder, or wrong, loudification, I mean the non standard English word, loutification is the word of the day…that encourages this not so deep thought - the golf hooligans you rightfully lament about Jay grew up in counter culture clubber generation reared on loud rock and roll music strait outta Caddy Shack - life imitating the old man yelling get of my lawn…at Beavis and Butthead. Thirty years later your old column explains the wicked appeal of a WWE Heel whose name shall not be named. Gotta run on. Onward and Upward. Thanks for thinking out loud, I man sharing your thoughts. Peace be with you Jay

Jay,

>>In the weeks preceding the Cup, it occurred to me that I was supposed to support the American team. Not only am I an American, I am (yikes!) a registered Republican.<<

Was "(yikes)" in the original or a recent insertion? If in the original, that was impressively prescient!

I was so pleased to see that you are writing for the Dispatch. It's such an excellent place for homeless conservatives to hang their hats. And Kevin Williamson is there!

Hope to see more from you there in the future.

P.S. Did you watch the Euros' putting streak at the Ryder Cup match? Wowza!

"Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel."

That's a statement about scoundrels, not patriotism.

Nationalism: To say ‘‘my country, right or wrong, is like saying, my mother, drunk or sober.’’ GK Chesterton .

I think you hit something that I have been thinking for a while about conservative temperament. I was raised social democrat and still will usually pull the D lever, but as I explore political conservatism more, I realize that at least the non populist kind speaks to my temperament, and some of those definitions of that generic conservatism are respect for being cautious, polite, understated, deferential, trusting in institutions, humble, and preferring incremental change over revolution.
