Whenever I think about the "Radios", I hearken back to my youth and the RFE commercial "On Broadway". I couldn't have been more than 12, at the most, and it had quite an impact on me even at that young, apolitical age.
And, of course, you can see the full ad on YouTube. Wasn't there general consensus that this was a good thing for us to do?
I am not a great fan of Lebron and a lot of his antics. However, I agree with him on there being great players on so many teams which are not properly celebrated. I would expand that into all team sports.
In the mid-90s, I participated in a summer exchange program to Germany, just before my senior year in high school. It was my first long trip away from home (six weeksl and I got pretty homesick. I was desperate for anything American; one night I scanned through radio stations on my Sony Walkman (remember those?) and found Radio Free Europe broadcasting a baseball game. I spent the rest of my evenings on that trip listening to random baseball games. It was such an unexpected and comforting link to home.
On the music front, I majored in music in college and I remember my sophomore year my woodwind methods professor told us he was retiring. I asked him if, when he retired, he was going to play and listen to more music than he could in his busy professor's schedule and I'll never forget his response. He says, "Music is my job. I'm retiring from my job." That was just about the saddest thing I'd ever heard and darned if it didn't end up having an influence on my life. I decided not to pursue a career as a musician. I would hate to lose the joy I get from music and music-making. I'm glad not all professionals get as jaded as that professor.
As usual, Mr. Nordlinger, great stuff. I'm very glad that your NR-style writing hasn't changed. Isn't it nice to see positive comments?

Ms. Blaise Metreweli has quite a Judi Dench vibe.

I used to love a Vernor’s float.
