The sad truth is that when Mr Trump launched his campaign in 2015, he took a position firmly based on racial discrimination. Colour of skin and accent of voice were (are still!) the bases for judgement. It says something about my fellow Americans that they nominated him to stand for the nation's highest executive office three times in succession. Even after Mr. Trump demonstrated his corruption, incompetence and treachery, they elected him anyway. That is why some candidates for state-wide office "play the race card," and why so many others do whatever it takes to avoid his disapproval. Courage and class may not put you in jail here, but it isn't likely to get you nominated for anything, either.
Jay, it's strange to read the proposed platform of a putatively conservative party that does not include the institution of private property. Perhaps this is why it also says nothing about anti-communism.
The absence of such points raises a red flag (perhaps literally) because it brings to mind Conquest's second law - "Any organization not explicitly and constitutionally right-wing will sooner or later become left-wing." So will any party that does not dedicate itself to private property. Absent it, what constitutes "a free economy" or "individual rights"?
"Equality of opportunity" - well, there's room for a lot of mischief in that phrase. If we look at the people around us, the genuinely self-evident truth is that all men are NOT created equal - not physically, not intellectually, not even morally. Given the freedom to do so, any group of persons will soon manifest social and economic inequalities, based on their natural differences. Any effort to suppress this is bound to result in the loss of freedoms.
Those who advocate "equality of opportunity" are asserting that everyone must start from the same point - taking no cognizance that there are individual differences in the runners' abilities and drive even before the start of the footrace. Advocates of leveling will argue that the only way the race can start with equal opportunity for all is to require them first to be made equal in condition. Thus we are returned to the original dilemma of egalitarianism. Equality is not the compatriot of liberty, but rather its enemy.

I read Nick's piece in The Dispatch. Was it a bit of "nut picking" .
I am all for the meritocracy, but in my own field, medicine, I do perhaps have some nativist sentiment, in that I feel a country as wealthy as the US should be able to educate enough doctors not to have to steal them from places that need them more, or have Americans have to go to the Caribbean by virtue of only having a 3.4 instead of a 3.5.
That we benefit from smart foreign born people coming here is good and Trump is trying to destroy that as the world's smartest college entrants have been turning away from the US and choosing UK and Canada, resulting in our losing our lead in research to China which now garners the most in new patents.
On the other hand I think we could do a better job of training our own physicians, techies, and nurses rather than importing them. If anything I favor tilting the immigrant pool to the " tired, your poor, huddled masses yearning to breathe free" like my grandparents who were denied education abroad but worked in the sweatshops so their children and grandchildren prospered. Most of the elite specialists coming from abroad come from wealthy families, not the huddled masses. And why are they huddling.

Having completed them, they then move here, pass their boards, and are admitted to practice.
By contrast, the number of specialty residencies available in the United States is strictly limited. This has served to restrict supply of specialists and to increase their earning potential significantly just as one might expect an oligopoly to do.
I am a recipient of the services of such specialists - my ophthalmologist is Chinese, my gastroenterologist is Indian, and my internist is Vietnamese. I have no complaint about them either professionally or personally. Still, it would be well for our medical-educational establishment to consider reforms of the system that brought the present situation about.
You need to complete a US residency to practice, and the foreign doctors might have done med school abroad but residency in the US.
The number of specialty residencies is limited but there are more residency spots in the primary care residencies than medical school graduates which is how most of the foreign trained doctors come in. And primary spots include Internal Medicine from which you could then go on to do a specialty like Rheumatology or Cardiology (some specialties you go directly to the specialty like Orthopedics).
So, I think the main need is for more medical school positions. Currently we only graduate enough MDs to fill 57% of our residency positions, then we pick up 18.5% from osteopathic school (DOs, at one time Osteopathy was similar to Chiropractic but it is now totally mainstream medicine and basically an end run for people who didn't get into medical school and graduates go to regular US residencies). The remaining 24% are foreign medical school graduates.
It is not that I dont like foreign doctors but it seems odd that American students have to go to the Caribbean to train.
That single dialogue between Chow Hang-tung and the judge is enough to mark one's entire life as a success.

Your bit about Heritage Americans made me smile. It reminds me of an exchange about which I have read, between Margaret Thatcher and the press. Margaret Thatcher was talking about British heritage, values, civility and the social customs that unite the Brits. She was asked “what are those values?”
