Beautifully done, Jay. Your correspondence, indeed your friendship both seem out of a past world. Thank you for sharing them.

My first NR cruise was November, 2006. My husband and I were so excited about Milton Friedman being on the cruise, and disappointed when he couldn't come. But the real highlight of that cruise was meeting Mr. Buckley. I treasure the memory of our very brief conversation, and love looking back at the picture of us (both looking a bit bedraggled). Keep the memories coming!

If you are exhausted by my series of rants, my apologies…as I always like what I am reading of your reflections on the passing scene…Quite the opposite if one where to tune into our Presidente Duterte, I mean President Trumps anti Truth Sociopaths posts on a soft political porn sight currently known as XXX. God help U.S.

To the Village Idiwitt, W.W.W.F.B.D…that is THE question…Leave his own magazine, as you did, because his conscience got the best of him, sane mind over the matter of money…I mean you did not hop on the Trump train to follow the money…like former estimable writers that spun off and flipped off all collective self respect…Against Trump editors might as well be donning American Greatness hats now…made in Chi Na Uyghur work to death camp…”My friend Xi”…I will forever…never be able to get that sick thought out of my head…a sitting U.S. President affectionately called Chairman Mao reincarnated…Every single political prisoner and victim of the Chinese Communist Corona Party (the new and improved evil empire) that you write of and interview Jay only brings to mind Xi heads a tyrannical, mass murdering, war criminal enterprise and The Dons friend should be marked for death…But the my friend part does explain why the current administration has not gone after the Chi Coms for starting a worldwide pandemic…because of a leak at a biological weapons facility (me thinks NOT that the research facility was for the good of mankind in Wuhan…but good for the xenophobic Han dynasty)…just sweep that worldwide calamities fault under the blood red rug as the Trump crime family has nothing but respect for fellow monsters, I mean mobsters. God help U.S.

Again, W.W.W.F.B.D. if a he were alive to witness a P.O.T.U.S. ordering hits, from the Bada Bing, I mean Oval Office on “‘suspected’ drug smuggler’s”….would Buck quip “why stop at international waters”, why not just order your national guard Don Corleone, I mean Trump, you sicked on the inner cities…to “just shoot first” at the colored man on the corner, then ask questions of surviving “suspects” later…Me thinks Buck would have already penned an article of impeachment for the many “corrupt” (Rich Lowry’s understatement, I mean comment on The Dons pardon of a two bitcoin huckster…the same pardomed man the President of the United States looked at Nora O’Donnell…with a straight face…claiming not to even know who his fellow Bitcon billionaire boys club member even is…and to this here Village Idiwitt’s astonishment, Norah made like one of those South Park caricatures of a FOXXXY News network bubble headed knock out…and went down on him. live, on camera! I kid, I kid rock you). I am proud of you leaving your former editor, autographed copy Preppy Handbook carrying disgrace to all that which is still true and worth fighting for and standing athwart history and yelling…wait, not your style Jay…calmly writing. Maybe I should take a page out of your playbill, but me thinks it is just not in my rock and roll nature…gotta run on. Enough already. Thanks for taking my rant Onward and Upward. Peace through superior mental firepower. `

Thanks Jay for writing this retrospective series. It's good to learn more about someone who has indirectly influenced my beliefs, but was a 'little before my time'. Much appreciated.
