Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, speaking with Aishah Hasnie on Fox News about Russia and the war on Ukraine, said:
“My personal view is very clear and very simple: Only strength brings peace. And if you are weak, you invite aggression. So Ukraine has to be strong. And that’s the reason why we are giving support militarily, financially, politically for itself. And this is something we would like to be continued as long as necessary. But again, our common goal is to bring this terrible war to an end.”
In the full interview, Merz is asked about Trump’s tariffs and other topical matters. About five minutes into the interview, the discussion turns to the war in Ukraine.
While Merz has been the German chancellor for only a few weeks (since May 6), he has previously held an impressive number of leadership roles in government and business. So far, like Jay, I’m impressed with and encouraged by his maturity and statesmanship. And for me it’s a relief that, in 2025, Chancellor Merz has joined the ranks of our world leaders.
Kevin Williamson of The Dispatch brought me here, so I'm heartened to learn that I can now read not one but two of the best writers and loveliest people on that platform.
Loved seeing Jay writing for the Dispatch. Please, Sir, I want some more.
Thank you for the link to the Labash article. I haven't been reading him regularly. I think I'll pay closer attention.
Just signed up for a year. Wonder writing. Thank you.
Good stuff all around, but the part about your teacher (and her obituary) were what makes life so worthwhile. What a life!
Dear Jay, I was at The Met on Sat for The Queen of Spade as well. I agree it is one of the top 10 best Opera.
Yup. A Labash tip o' the hat to the other Billy Crystal in "When Harry Met Sally." Thanks. I needed that!
Mr. Nordlinger: Maturity, rationality, and stability. You wanna run for president?
