And of course, Trump being Trump, he immediately "terminated" all trade talks with Canada because of the Ontario ad quoting Reagan against tariffs. The man is insane.
I’m loving your items about your discovery of how the kids talk these days. First “rizz” now “boo.” Has a “gorillas in the mist” quality, like what has been said about cosmopolitan journalists writing about conservatives. And amongst all the dire news, one cannot underestimate the importance of the levity in your musings. Next week- “sus” and “mid.” Thanks, Jay!
Juxtaposing your affection for Reagan and a concern for the debt is a bit problematic.
Of all US presidents with the exception of Wilson and FDR who were fighting World Wars the largest increase in the national debt was under Reagan who oversaw a 161% increase in the debt. The increase in debt for other modern presidents, (adjusting for years in office, eg doubling the number for the 4 yr presidents) is George HW at 85%, George W at 72.6%, Trump at 78% Obama at 64% Biden at 61%, Clinton at 29%. The GOPers producing the biggest debt is absolutely all about tax cuts.
It was Reagan who claimed lowering taxes would raise more revenue, which is as crazy as the left's Modern Monetary Theory that you can print as much money as you can, and I put them both in the Money Grows on Trees category.
To quote a formerly distinguished N.R. contributor that jumped the shark and joined the Trump Train- I prefer clarity to agreement. Lowering taxes has consistently produced higher debts is whatchumacallit…fallacious. Spending more than one takes in and getting away with it is something only men with guns, I mean government, can sustain since the year of our Lord 1981-…1961, 1941…1841…whatever year you want to rewind Big Ben government clock too. I do love how you implicitly blame “‘conservative’ Dems” for our Big Government debts…One might respectfully disagree with you and straight up blame very liberal spenders of other people’s money, I mean liberal Dems…and wasteful military, I mean prolific spending by Nordlingers hero…that you definitely seem to be opposed to Reagan now as much as I consider it a given you did then, for probably a host of reasons…especially liberal Dems penchant for preaching it is the role of government to take from the rich to give to the poor…I mentioned nothing about social welfare in my comments…but to say, I mean wave off taxation is legalized theft…is not a cliche to the payee..but most certainly is a form of theft to someone sending a check involuntarily to Washington…to avoid men with guns…I mean the taxman.
I am not a big fan of someone declaring”we have an agreement “, then define the agreement as being someone that agrees with you…i.e. that is the same thing as saying, in this context, if you don’t agree with me, I mean you, I and those that disagree with you on the role of government are responsible for your government’s financial malfeasance. But if you want to play the courts upheld it card, am I to suppose you will defend The Roberts Courts every ruling. How progressive of you. Respectfully, you and I both know such is not the case, just as passing legislation in Congress and the President signing it into law does not make Trump right about everything…but God help U.S., at least we both can agree on that as we share a mutual respect for Jay…and I consider it a given, contempt and no respect for The Dons megalomaniacal want for legislation that agrees with him and his crime families crony capitalist pig bitcon ambitions.Gotta run on. Thanks for taking my rant. 🍺✌️
In those days, Congress was still responsible for spending, and Congress was run by Democrats (Tip O’Neill). The Cold War was still on during Reagan’s presidency. And Reagan took the helm with double digit inflation, interest rates, and unemployment. In general we Americans want free stuff and don’t want to pay for it. In my experience, raising taxes results in more borrowing & spending, and laying the blame at the feet of any president alone without considering what was happening is not clear thought.
Congress passes the bills but the president has a huge amount of power not to mention the veto. I agree it is not only the president, but the increase under Reagan was so stark, twice that of any president not in a major war that he bears some of the responsibility. If Obama had increased the debt 161% you wouldn't fault him. The president has to sign those budgets to become law. One could excuse all the various leaders for problems peculiar to their administration. Both Bushes had wars. Carter had inflation, Obama had a financial crisis.
Tip O Neil was not the one encouraging the large tax cuts particularly for the wealthy, it was the agreement with Reagan - you can have your tax cuts and we will keep our spending.
"In my experience, raising taxes results in more borrowing" you would have to show me, I think the opposite is true, cutting taxes has always led to more deficits with Reagan and the Bushes. If you look at all the presidents, taxes go down with the GOP and up with the Dems, and that is why the GOP has presided over much greater increases in debt.
Hey Wolfy, I had the same thought and share the same sentiments as your detractors…you made no dishonorable mention of the actual predominant party in the legislature…that actually wrote the bills…that someone your clearly have no affection… for Reagan, to sign, or not to sign (where they not drinking buddies!?). ..Who, believe it or not, Reagan was quite right in believing in lowering taxes will produce more revenue for the government in the aggregate…Just as it would be nice of you to concede that most of the things Tip O’Neal and big government wanted to take from Peter to give Paul is called stealing…Just I am willing to concede that Reagan’s massive build up of our nuclear arsenal was a complete waste of good money and scarce resources…When all the Thatcher and Reagan should have done is place a huge bounty on the Russian Czars head and provided aid and comfort and weapons to counter insurgents, I.e. anti communists east of Berlin, from day one of his first administration. But I digress, both parties are to blame for the bigger the government, the smaller the citizen…and it is only going to get worse so long as we the people have a Neo nationalist sociopath giving megalomaniacal orders from the Bada Bing, I mean Oval Office. God help U.S. We the Living in Idiocracy. Resistance is not futile, it is your moral duty. Anywho, gotta run on. Thanks for taking my rant🍺✌️
Actually though the Democrats had the majority in Congress it was the Kemp Roth Bill of 1981 sponsored by those two GOP congressmen that resulted in the big tax cuts and they passed it with a combination of Republicans and conservative Dems.
Lowering taxes has consistently produced higher debts.
I think the social welfare is stealing is a meaningless cliche. I am not a big fan of spending and oppose things like the student debt forgiveness, but, no, social spending is not equivalent to me mugging you, because we have an agreement that the government can tax and they have been doing it since Sumer, and the courts have upheld it as part of the law of this country.
Social democracy is the backbone of every prosperous and free country in the world, the Chesterton Fence of all good governments, and I think the arguments about how much welfare are fine, and I am no progressive, but calling it theft is not what it is.
And of course, Trump being Trump, he immediately "terminated" all trade talks with Canada because of the Ontario ad quoting Reagan against tariffs. The man is insane.
Recalling Sen. Dirksen from my youth, "A million, here, a million there, and pretty soon you're talking about some real money."

I did a little quick math and concluded that my share of the National Debt is only $151,00.
I checked, and learned that I can get a loan to pay it off.
Problem solved.
All the more reason to thank you for the music link.
What is the debt share of your grandchildren?
