I disagree. Visit a National Cemetery, join a group of combat vets, or join any individual who has honorably served in any of our armed forces to have a beer together.
I believe I was misinterpreted. I don't think we need to look outward for exemplars of freedom. I do make this statement living in Texas, so that may skew my view, but Veterans of any war are well treated, respected, and held up as examples of Freedom and Service to our nation and others. By going to a National Cemetery one can see those who have given all for others. Talk to a group of combat vets and you'll see a commaradie and dedication to serving their nation and others. I believe there are plenty of examples of our service members being absolutely dedicated to protecting our freedoms.
I once was in San Antonio on Memorial Day weekend and saw a parade that featured a number of families with multiple generations in the Armed Services, many of them with Hispanic last names. Very inspiring.
BTW, my father enlisted right after WW II and served in the Atlantic and the Pacific, and my mother worked in a factory on the home front during WW II. I believe they would be horrified by our vets are being treated these days.
Jay, your writing is extraordinary.
Keep it up.

Plays for the NAIA Championship tonight. Please keep an eye on the team.
“For those who have had to fight for it, freedom has a taste the protected can never know.” (Anonymous)
Excellent piece. Fascinating that we need to look to other countries for exemplars of freedom, here on Memorial Day weekend, 2025.

Zygmund-I was responding to the article and to the tenor of our times. That said, you still make a good point. Have a nice Memorial Day.

I should have typed “right after Pearl Harbor,” not “right after WW II”
Great stuff Jay!
Thank you, JK.
