On the GOP, conservatism, the Venezuelan Nobel, and more
I second the "Hell, no!" to the idea that there is a straight line connecting Reagan's supporters and Trumpism. Or even a crooked one.
Trump himself denies the connection when he trashes the Bushes, John McCain, and Mitt Romney.
1. Never saw a young Republican when I was one (for context, I wore a homemade FORD/DOLE T-shirt on my college campus).
2. The official membership for "young" is "under 40", which seems pretty loose.
3. The official card-carrying Young Republicans (TM) that I have met over the years rarely fall into the "normal" range".
My experience of Republicans as a younger person was pretty much the same as yours.
“Is there a straight line from the Reagan era to Trumpism?”
As a Reagan conservative (no longer a Republican), I'm with you on the "hell no" Mr. Nordlinger.
Hannan speaks as you write, Jay—with precision and perception.
Thank you, Connor.
