Jay,

Agree on the mega yuck factor grade you assign to Trump’s Labor Department Banner. I think President Trumo is more Donnie from Queens/Tony Soprano than Big Brother is Watching You, but you sure can’t tell it from that banner.

Nice to hear your stomach turned a little at the display of Presidential photos in post offices, etc. Always made me queasy to see Nixon/Ford/Carter/Reagan’s visage next to the elevator bank of the Kansas City VA Hospital when I was a student/resident/fellow. Thank God for the painting on the opposite wall depicting the Japanese surrender on the battleship Missouri. Better than Dramamine.

I was in the Tretyakov State Gallery in Moscow in 1977. There was a portrait of Leonid Brezhnev hanging in a prominent place. How nice it was to condescend to my Soviet companion that such a travesty was unthinkable in the USA. Hope I don’t have to eat my words.

Dear Jay,

I am happy to pardon your "mush," but I must note that your picture on that Labor Day poster is bit over the top.

With the unfurling of banners with that Sadamn Hussein ugly mug looking down the streets of Washington, I mean the so damn insane I cannot believe we the people of the United States have a Fuhrering, I mean furling Trump banners like a bully big brother, fittingly from the brutalists Department of War…I mean why do we have a socialist jobs security department in the first place. Did I mention Big Brother Don Trump is mobbed up too…Just what side of the G.W. Bridge do you think Donnie from Manhattan was calling from…I can’t help but wonder why the good people of our nation’s capital do not protest to much, where have all the college boyz and girls gone when civilized society actually needs the kids to scream out loud. Again, I hate to pull the H card from the bottom of the political deck, but this megalomaniac and his henchman literally imitating the cult of personality tactics of Hitler and Stalin….all praise to Dear Leader, and shove this grotesque propaganda posters everywhere in the peoples faces….I wish an intrepid reporter would ask The Don to his Orangeman face if, in the 1930’s, it would have been alright for a German to burn the swastika, or tear down a public banner with the little Austrian turds ugly mug on it…For, Mr. President, from the one by gone megalomaniac to the one I am speaking of, do you have no shame (Ashl Babbitt still cannot be reached for comment). Oh, wait, like the Nazi one party state, the press corps is now only filled with sicko fan’s reporting on their Dear Leaders making Amerika great again. Mr. President, leave aside the irony that there is such thing as a Department of Labor in the good ole U.S. of A, what country did you grow up in that makes you admire fascists advertising. Oh, wait, me thinks your dad was an admirer who just thought thought the Austrian turd should not have gone on the warpath.

Speaking of William F. Buckley, if only I were not a child of the MTV generation, maybe my language would not be so coarse, and I could channel his spirit, and could come up with something thoughtful on how to rid our world of the Orangeman menace. Why the Democrats do not hound the President on a daily basis for still not having answered for the atrocity of January 6th and the premature death of a young looney tune true believer who bought by crook, line and sinker a fing BIG LIE the election was stolen…and that The Don was not removed from office and arrested for gleefully stuffing his fat face with Big Macs and sporting wood looking out of the Bada Bing window, I mean the Oval Office, while pure white trash proud boys where chanting “HANG MIKE PENCE”…the fact that The Don is not reminded on a daily basis by the loyal opposition that you Mr President got away with a high crime against our sacred republic…Mr President do you fear God and love your neighbor as your Trump Bible commands…God help U.S. Where have all the cowboys gone. At least Rudy Ghoulianis Catholic guilt so bugs him that he turned into a day drinker (hat tip Jonah). Gotta run on and jump the Trump train turnstiles, because unlike so many a moral compass The Don has broken, I ain’t paying for it. Resistance is not futile, it is ones duty to oppose TRUMPISM in all its grotesque forms. Gotta run on. Thanks for taking my rant Onward and Upward Buttercup. Peace through superior mental firepower

"in every one of them, there were pictures of the president and vice president: Reagan and Bush."

This reminds me of the "WKRP in Cincinnati" episode where the Soviet hog expert is trying to defect. "You can't defect here: you'll have to go to Cleveland. They have a picture of President Carter." (The outpost in Cincinnati still had ex-President Nixon's picture.)

Photos don't freak me out. In the Army, every battalion has a wall with chain of command photos arranged from the local lieutenant colonel all the way up through the various generals, and ending with the President. Mainly a target for E-4 Mafia pranks-- drawing moustaches, switching photos, replacing the devision commander with a local striper.

Mr. Nordlinger: Thank you for your continuing to call out Trump and his administration for his coarseness, his depravity, and his narcissism. This is probably not in your "wheelhouse," so to speak, but I have been talking up the need for mockery, not coarse, but pointed and based solidly in fact, history, and the breaking of long-standing norms. He is ignorant, self-absorbed, rude, functionally illiterate, and barely coherent in speech. Perhaps some serious malady is responsible, but unless and until it is acknowledged, laughing disdainfully at his every statement and move is my sanity sanctuary.

Despite having to watch so many of my friends on the Trump Train as it whizzes by, I try to be as generous in conversation with them as I have always been with my progressive friends. Indeed, although I am appalled at the image of the New Soviet Man from our labor department, it does not differ in kind (IMHO) from The Life of Julia (" ... under President Obama ... "). But that Red Square banner of Trump is so shocking that, Jay, if I did know it was you sharing it with me, I would assumed it was Photoshop'd.

I went through a phase of trying to see all the major musicals from the 1930s: Fred and Ginger, Gold Diggers, the many Big Broadcasts. I was shocked when in one of these films (can't recall which) the Busby Berkeley dancers formed a reverential face of FDR. That's what the Trump banner reminded me of. There surely was a personality cult around Old Moose Jaw, and with time it faded. I am hoping for the same with Trump.

God bless you! You help me to keep my sanity! I still think you and Mona and Kevin Williamson should have a podcast together where you grill some prominent public figure. You guys would be the next Will, Roberts and Donaldson! I would tremble to be the BS peddling politician who tried to run that gauntlet!
