"I expect more from the Guardian and its editors. They may be on the left, but they are serious, and not stupid."

You can say that, and yet, they published a book review that said Mario Vargas Llosa went “from the hard left to the hard right.”

If they are serious, and they are not stupid, why did they choose to do this? I would suggest it's because they are hardcore ideologues. (I will not identify their locked-in ideology as either "left" or "right," because those terms contain no content.)

This being the case, why would one "expect more" from them than that what they publish would serve their ideology? Many hardcore ideologues are both serious and intelligent. That's why they are influential.

“Do you have to like the character, or characters, in order to like the novel, or story?”

I do. So while I'm glad to have read your two-parter on Toscanini, it's not by much, and I definitely won't read the biography.
