It seems to me (and I read a lot of news and opinion these days) that editing standards have slipped, across the board. Much of it is due to self-publishing being so easy these days, but I see it as well with traditional media outlets with designated editors. Maybe AI will save us...
Another shameful episode is about to commence in Alaska. I cannot believe what our country has become. Saddened to see so many fellow citizens just fine with it all.
There is no justification for greeting the criminal Putin on American soil. Neither does anyone expect that the American President is capable of negotiating a just conclusion to the invasion of Ukraine. Why does the US not demand the presence of Ukraine in any discussion of that nation's welfare? What we are watching now is worse than Munich. Chamberlain was an honourable but misdirected statesman. Trump seeks his own advancement, justice be damned.
Alaska = Munich doesn't seem right. If (it's too awful to say "when") Trump sells out Ukraine, the Ukrainians will still fight. The Czechs and their 1.5 M-man army (as my friends in Prague acknowledge) acquiesced to the dismemberment of their nation. No judgment here, just pointing out a significant difference. To paraphrase Churchill, Trump may choose dishonor, but the Ukrainians will choose war.
The AFP article linked below (from the Moscow Times) cites one of the stomach-churning comments President Trump made about Ukraine and Zelensky this morning while he blabbed for nearly an hour at a White House press conference:
Trump said he was a “little bothered” by Zelensky saying he needed constitutional approval for any territorial concessions.
“I mean, he's got approval to go into war and kill everybody. But he needs approval to do a land swap?” he said. “Because there'll be some land swapping going on.”
Trump Expects “Constructive Conversation” With Putin
I agree "advocate for" is incorrect. But I think "advocate that" is not quite right either. I think one advocates something, not for something or that something happen. The correct phrasing of the sentence, in my opinion, would be "I advocated a promotion for John.
LOL from 1980’s Guy who makes up his own grammarly rules as my 60’s something parents tried to correct while I would just go upstairs and blare The Clash. If only appreciated sober, classical music more, not classic rock, like my generation we would not be living in Idiocracy. Oh, wait, I guess my parents were right all along. Gotta run on ✌️
I always enjoyed your Salzburg Journals at NR, despite not being a fan of the featured music. Your descriptions of the city, including the people, have earned it a place on my visiting bucket list.
Thanks, Jay, for being a voice of reason in these, I guess you would call it, after times……or AT. (where T could stand for something else) 😀

It seems more more likely that AI will normalize bad grammar.

It sounds as if "Maria Stuarda" was excellent if the audience closed their eyes.
!
"Homeland" still strikes me as off. Like something you'd see in a country where the Department of the Interior is where you find the secret police.

Hmm.
Thanks for your comment on my comments, I guess🤪. Gotta run on.
You are quite right.
Thank you, Mr. Nordlinger. From you that is quite a compliment.
Thanks as always for your daily meditations, Jay. "This is madness." Enough said.
