Trump hates Zelensky because Zelensky and his just cause remind him of his subservience to Putin, which he can’t escape. If Zelensky would just go away and stop asking for help, problem solved.

Trump continues his descent into madness.

Paxton and Toth are in no way conservers of the ideals of the American founding.

I didn't think it possible for the U.S. Congress to become any less respectable, but the departure of Dan Crenshaw will do the trick.

I am a student of American history, so I know the country has suffered through bad presidential administrations in the past, but we'd have to go a ways to go lower than the present bunch.

Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra performed for nearly 50 years at Hill Auditorium every spring in Ann Arbor - it was called the May Festival. My father would take me with him to one evening performance; my mother took my sister to the Sunday afternoon event, if I recall correctly. I’m pretty sure the two of them attended the other nights on their own. Pre-show, we’d have dinner at restaurants that time has now forgotten- perhaps the Whiffletree? Could also have been the Old German. I say this from my memories that you evoke to recall that my father, who often had to pinch me to stay awake, needed to give me no such encouragement when Ormandy finished each performance with a rousing version of the “The Victors”. Imagine that: a world-class orchestra performing the local fight song for its audience. The audience rose to their feet every time and belted out the lyrics.

Fantastic. Thank you, Paul.

Jay, you should be able to find the UM Fight Song at Accuradio.com. If I recall correctly, about ten years ago the service had a special, temporary channel featuring performances by marching bands. I rate the song as 5 stars; it will occasionally pop up on my favorites channel.

I see various writers I admire trying to ascribe rationality and a chess player's mindset to Trump in Iran and I think what is rational in a world wide strategy sense about Trump's treatment of Ukraine? Reagan would have sent so much hardware to Ukraine it would have made your head spin.

We cannot make the point enough that conservatism does not equal MAGA populism.

Thank you for today’s column. Not a question at all - it’s podcasted.

Stupendously accurate discussion on conservatism. Keep beating that drum. Conservatism is NOT “far” right populism. At all. I would argue it is the exact opposite.

Putin or Ukraine? Such a difficult choice.

Thanks again.

First, among many other reasons, I will never forgive the GOP for betraying Ukraine.

I have struggled with finding the words for a proper response to the invasion of Ukraine, as have others.

Had the Western Alliance -if there exists still such an entity- acted earlier and more decisively, the invasion may have been already repelled.

On the other hand, this is Europe's war; President Trump is correct to point out that the British, Europeans, Canadians (of which I am one), the Australians et al, have failed to maintain militaries sufficient enough for the tasks they wish performed.

I have often posted that we (the traditional, post-war Western Alliance) can fight Russia, Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, China, and North Korea now, or we can fight them later.

Defending Ukraine economically, sentimentally, and militarily remains a heck of a good place to start.

Final thought, posed as a question; are fight songs strictly a US collegiate phenomenon, or are they the norm in the colleges of other countries as well?

Like the US/Canadian Olympic Hockey Game, it is too soon for me to discuss Texas.

Great essay, Jay; best money I have spent in years.

“Let the joyous news be spread, the wicked witch of the west is dead”….in the strange new political Trump world, one day I shake my head and fists at lady’s from the Trump view, I mean voyeur (did you know Karoline Levitt started as cocktail waitresses in the Trump Hotel and Casino and rose to the Bada Bing spokesmodel’s after putting in hours of overtime working in the back room), for The Don’s most despicable of tongues lashings he gave Zelinsky, blaming the victim for the rape and pillaging, leave aside mass murder and kidnappings, of his fellow countryman (the corollary the Russians where in the right to play let’s make a deal with The Don), the next day he is sending arms to Ukraine (because Z played let’s make a deal), to me be overjoyed today that the “Supreme Leader” A Hole a Tollah of Tehroran has suffered the same fate as his fellow black robbed character, in the greatest kids movie ever made for adults, to today’s anti gos pel news that The Don is back at it again blaming Ukraine for being invaded by his fellow mobster Putin….Forgive me Jesus, please deliver U.S. from the evil that got his start on Alex Jones Info Wars amd grew up to be the biggest POSPOTUS to ever live in the White House, since his fellow racists and peace now populist candidate Wilson.

The Don has led a life indistinguishable from the Wizard of Oz and even has millions of sicko fans true believers in his schtick (Ashli Babbitt still cannot be reached for comment), even through the mobster has never produced anything of worth, without using and abusing other people’s money…and he is so good at playing people they still be lie eve the unholy Trump Bible Salesman and G.O.P. Crasher can do nothing wrong, even after he should have suffered the constitutionally prescribed punishment for treason the night of January 6th…but, again, The Don already knew his audience would not care if innocents where shot down on the streets of Manhattan, or the cold streets of Minneapolis, because it is sloppy Joe’s fault. This I believe, there will be a reckoning, it will either be the formerly grand ole party, or our country is going to hell and a waste basket. I cannot believe another one of the kinda good ones went down in Texas. But, then again, since the valiant warrior did not have the courage to speak out about the Big Fing Lie five years ago and demand his fellow Congressman hold the Great Prevaricator (hat tip Cal Thomas) accountable for a pure white trash riot and attack on the Capital and premature death of a true believer in the Art of the Steal (not to mention The Dons in eye shot stuffing his fat Orangeman face with Bic Macs and ear shot of his sicko fans literally chanted HANG MIKE PENCE to intimidate a Vice President of the United States), I lament that in the heat of that battle the former Navy Seal went back up to the surface where he felt there was safety in numbers, even though every single Congressman that did not vote it impeach and every single Senator that did not vote to convict the mobster should never be forgiven, or forgotten…all of whom still standing will say nothing about what you lament this morning Jay…bad people are sheep, amd my formerly beloved party is a herd following a guy who literally has never read the Books of Moses, but the crony capitalist pig is so utterly shameless, The Don literally hawked the book with his own name emblazoned in fools gold, and I do not remember Crenshaw condemning his Dear Leader for that grotesque violations of the FIRST AND SECOND COMMANDMENTS in Dans copy of The Bible. God help U.S. Where have all the Republican cowboys gone. In the meantime, resistance to Trumpism is not futile, it is your duty. Gotta run on. Thanks for taking my rant Onward and Upward. Peace through superior mental firepower

And I appreciate you, Jay. Especially for holding Trump/Maga's feet to the fire.

Jonah Goldberg agrees with us on that. "100%," as is the current lingo.
